We haven't had much sun or warmth this summer in Kristiansund. Yet Norway throws some magic into the skies.......
Giving us rainbows during the gray days......
And during the sunny nights.

Took our relatives out for dinner in Kristiansund at Sjøstjerner for some local fare. I looked up and spotted this dried fish cover. Very appropriate scenery as I was eating Bacalao, the Portuguese dried fish stew.
On the street outside I spotted this manhole cover featuring our local heroine the clipfish woman. Because of her hard work in years gone by I get to enjoy Bacalao today.
This is the view from UNCLES CAFE in downtown Kristiansund. The harbor ferry (or Sundbåten in Norwegian) on the left is the FRAMNÆS and is older and has gorgeous woodwork. I couldn't see the name of the one on the right but it has a cute face with its' round life preserver nose.
I love this older house with it's tiny windows and the details around the front entrance.
Looks like Kristiansund grew up and surrounded the house.
I took this terrible and weird photo on one of our rare sunny days. It looks like our peaceful little island community is about to be visited by a very large Arthropod.
Jeg tok dette forferdelig og rare bildet på en våre sjeldne solfylte dager. Det ser ut som vår fredelige lille øysamfunnet er om å bli besøkt av en stor leddyr.
But thankfully it is just another platform rig cruising by.
Men heldigvis er det bare en annen plattform riggen reiser med.
I spotted this manhole cover in the Myra neighborhood and haven't found another one like it anywhere in town. At first I thought the umbrella looking shapes were meant to symbolize all the rain that Kristiansund gets. But that can't be right as it is usually far too windy on our island city to even think about opening an umbrella. Then I took a closer look at the shapes and thought they resembled the clipfish that Kristiansund is famous for. I asked some locals at the wonderful Easter dinner we attended and I think I have a better answer. I'm going to say "I think" because my norwegian is not so great even after five years of living in this beautiful country. I think the shapes are there to represent the wooden umbrellas they lay over the drying clipfish to protect them from the rain. I hope in the very near future to get a picture of one of these "fish umbrellas" for you. I seem to remember seeing some in Karihola.
Lilly is hiking up to the VARDEN. It is the highest point on KIRKELANDET at 78 meters. There is a wonderful 360 degree view from up there. Inside the VARDEN are binoculars at the top of a winding staircase. As you climb the stairs you can enjoy the murals on the walls.
There is the old factory for making rope. Det er den gamle fabrikken for å gjøre tau.
This is the new blue bridge. Lookout!!! Dette er den nye blå broen. Være forsiktig!!!
The days are still mild but I do believe Autumn approaches. For the first time in many weeks I was able to go for a very short walk yesterday. Fibromyalgia is a pain! It was warm and sunny but definite signs of a change in seasons were everywhere. Ripening Rowan berries, dried seed pods, red and brown leaves, the magical color of purple.
I like our manhole covers with the three things Kristiansund is known for,Clipfishwoman,Sundbåten, and our modern church.
Thursday we were in the center on an errand and I insisted on a cheesecake break so we went to TOR SEVALDSEN. This was the most wonderfully rich cheesecake I have ever eaten. The topping is a black currant gel. When we were in Oslo I looked for a TOR SEVALDSEN but they do not exist there. Oslos's loss. Turns out TOR SEVALDSEN was started right here in KRISTIANSUND! I was so surprised! Just one more reason to be so very proud of our little town.
And here is our herring boy statue.
Og her er vår sild gutt statuen.

I can't do much walking right now but Lilly the Dog has agreed to help me out. On her daily walks she is going to make a note of all she sees and then report back to me. I will illustrate her notes.
My name is Lilly. I live in Kristiansund. I want to show you my beautiful town. Follow me!

We walked down to the sea last night at 8pm. There was not a hint of sunset in the sky. It looked like the middle of the day. I still can't believe I live here on such a beautiful island.
The locals have these nice big barbecues out for all to enjoy and the whole neighborhood shows up for a huge midsummer picnic and bonfire. I thought these barbecues looked like a couple of alien creatures going for a stroll by the water.
We passed these roses that grow wild everywhere. In the right hand corner you can see how big and fat the rosehips are. I was disappointed when I tried to harvest them one fall to make rosehip jam as they have no pulp to speak of. I don't know if these roses are escapees or truly wild.
I just love these tall yellow flowers growing in clusters everywhere. Someone told me they are escapees and are called "outlaws".
And here is our naughty kitty making sure we know the way home. She used to walk all the way down to the sea with us but we don't let her do that anymore as she thinks she has superpowers and can walk in front of cars and buses and make them stop.
Such a change from Oslo......
.......to Kristiansund with the fog rolling in.
It's so very quiet on my island. I suppose many Norwegians have gone to their "huts" in the mountains or are off chasing the sun in southern lands. Personally summer is my favorite time in Kristiansund. Lots of wildflowers, butterflies, birds, and sun. Yet never too hot. Paradise.
