LOOKING UP AND DOWN,SER OPP OG NED

Took our relatives out for dinner in Kristiansund at Sjøstjerner for some local fare. I looked up and spotted this dried fish cover. Very appropriate scenery as I was eating Bacalao, the Portuguese dried fish stew.

On the street outside I spotted this manhole cover featuring our local heroine the clipfish woman. Because of her hard work in years gone by I get to enjoy Bacalao today.

SKETCHING IN KRISTIANSUND

After I finish my Norwegian language course, sometime in July, I hope to start a sketching club in Kristiansund. I've noticed they have a camera club, art club, knitting club, diving club, and many other clubs here so why not a sketching club. I was inspired by the URBAN SKETCHERS blog where correspondents from around the world send in sketches of their cities. I hardly ever see anything from Norway. Time to get some sketches of Kristiansund out there! So I'll start with some of mine.

Of course one of the things I had to sketch was our famous lady,Clipfishwoman . The next two sketches are from the other side of Kirkelandet. The first one is looking out towards Averoy Lighthouse and the second one is looking across a small inlet to some summer houses in Karihola.

Sightseeing in Kristiansund

Friday in Kristiansund was another blue sky windless day. Rare, incredible and not to be wasted. So I went down to the harbor. We are very proud of our harbor ferry, the Sundbåten, or the sound boat in English. Here she is just coming in.

Sundbåten carries passengers to the four islands of Kirklandet,Innlandet,Nordlandet, and Gomalandet. Nowadays there are bridges and you can drive to the different islands or "lands" as the locals call them, but many still prefer to use the Sundbåten. The ferry was begun in 1876 and is listed as the world's oldest continuously operating ferry system. Today was an extra special day as the first woman is working on the Sundbåten. And here she is....

The only downside to all that sunshine was I couldn't get a better photo of the Klippfiskkjerringa's(Klipfish wife's) companion, Sildegutten (herring boy). Both statues were created by the very talented Tore Bjørn Skjølsvik.

Behind him you can see the Sunbåten they have built for children to play on. There are several around town.

Kristiansund,Norway

I thought today I would post a couple of pictures I took last summer as today is still gray and making my photos grainy.

This is our most famous statue,Clipfishwoman,by Tore Bjørn Skjølsvik. Clipfish are fish, usually cod, that were dried on the smooth rocks. Kristiansund has a lot of smooth rocks and wind,so the fishermen brought the cod here and the women and children did the work of laying them out to dry on the rocks. This product was then shipped to many places but especially Portugal who use it to make a lovely dish called Bacalao. They make it here in Kristiansund and it is quite tasty.

This is Kirkelandet church built in 1964 and the architect was Odd Østbye. It must have been shockingly modern when it was first built. In fact I have heard it described as Norway's most daring and modern church.I'm quiet fond of it and proud to say I live on the island of Kirkelandet.
